The ongoing investigation into the Dharmasthala mass burial case remains unaffected by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s recent comments, according to sources within the Karnataka Home Ministry.
Political Statements vs. Investigative Process
Shivakumar, on August 14, 2025, alleged that a “highly organised conspiracy” had been crafted to tarnish the reputation of Dharmasthala’s administration and its hereditary head, Veerendra Heggade. However, officials close to the probe insist that such statements will not alter the course of the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) work.
Sources clarified that the Congress’s national leadership is not taking sides in the matter and is instead focused on ensuring that the truth emerges through a transparent investigation. Witness-complainant Bheema’s testimony, recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), is central to the case. The SIT is bound to present its findings to the court upon completion of the probe.
“If the SIT’s evidence supports Bheema’s allegations, the political repercussions could be significant, including for Shivakumar himself,” a Home Ministry source cautioned.
SIT’s Relentless Approach
Despite speculations that the investigation might be halted after no skeletal remains were found at the 13th excavation site, the SIT has pressed on with its work. On Thursday (August 14, 2025), multiple new spots were marked for digging, and the team is considering inputs from fresh witnesses willing to come forward.
Officials revealed that certain details are being withheld for now, as they could be “shocking” when disclosed. This strategy, they said, aims to protect the integrity of the investigation.
Calls for Caution in Public Commentary
Congress leaders within the state have expressed concern that premature or speculative statements might unintentionally harm the political prospects of senior leaders. At the same time, Home Ministry insiders noted that BJP leaders have shown a lack of understanding of the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) role in the case.
The Road Ahead
The SIT’s persistence signals a commitment to uncovering the facts, regardless of political noise. While Shivakumar’s remarks have stirred debate, investigators stress that their focus remains firmly on evidence, witness testimony, and the judicial process.
With more digging sites identified and potential new witnesses under consideration, the Dharmasthala mass burial probe is far from over — and the eventual findings may have both legal and political consequences.
