The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the Dharmasthala mass burial case has been given complete freedom to continue its probe, including further exhumation operations. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara, speaking on Monday (August 18, 2025), clarified that the State government will not interfere in the investigation and that the SIT alone will decide the next course of action.

SIT to Proceed Independently

Addressing concerns about external influence, the Home Minister said:

“The SIT has full liberty to carry out its probe, including further digging if needed. No government functionary or minister has put pressure on the team. The SIT will submit its report directly to the court.”

The government had constituted the SIT on July 19, 2025, following a shocking complaint filed on July 3 by a former sanitation worker of the Dharmasthala Temple Administration (DTA), who alleged he was forced to bury bodies.

Current Status of the Probe

  • Exhumation work paused temporarily: Sources in the SIT confirmed that digging operations have been paused for investigative reasons, but will resume soon after DNA analysis reports are available.
  • Bones recovered: So far, bones belonging to at least two individuals have been found and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis.
  • Multiple sites under verification: The SIT will re-check previously dug spots and verify claims made by Bheema, the key whistleblower. Investigators believe Bheema’s testimony is credible, though topographical changes have made it difficult to locate exact burial sites.

What Lies Ahead

The SIT is also considering involving local residents in verification processes to cross-check possible burial locations. Home Ministry sources indicated that investigators may have already come across “something significant,” though details remain confidential.

The final report will be submitted to the Principal Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate First Class, Belthangady Taluk. Until then, exhumation and forensic procedures will continue as required.

Key Takeaway

With the State Home Minister affirming the SIT’s autonomy, the investigation into the Dharmasthala mass burial case appears set to move forward with renewed clarity. The SIT now holds the authority to decide when, where, and how further exhumations will take place, ensuring the probe is both thorough and independent.
