The Tale of Mischievous Rabbit

Once upon a time, in a lush green forest in India, there were four little rabbits named Chintu, Mintu, Bittu, and Raja. They lived with their Amma (mother) in a cozy burrow beneath the roots of a big banyan tree.

One morning, their Amma said, "Children, you may go and play in the fields or by the river, but do not go into Lala Kisan's (Farmer Lala's) garden. Your father had an accident there, and he was caught and made into a pie by Lala's wife."

Chintu, Mintu, and Bittu, being obedient little bunnies, went down the forest path to gather berries and tender grass. But Raja, who was quite mischievous, decided to do exactly what he was told not to do. He ran straight to Lala Kisan's garden and squeezed through a gap in the fence.

Inside the garden, Raja’s eyes widened with excitement. Rows of vegetables stretched before him—cabbages, carrots, radishes, and cucumbers. Without a second thought, Raja began nibbling on everything he saw.

But soon, Raja heard a loud shout. "Arre, chor! (Hey, thief!)" It was Lala Kisan! He had spotted Raja and began chasing him with a big stick.

Terrified, Raja ran as fast as he could. In his panic, he lost one of his sandals in the cabbage patch and the other near the tomato vines. Barefoot and frightened, Raja darted into a pile of old pots to hide. But one of the pots tipped over, making a loud clanging noise, and Lala Kisan came even closer.

Raja ran again and found himself caught in a net hanging over the brinjal (eggplant) bushes. He struggled and wriggled but couldn’t get free. Just then, some sparrows flying nearby saw Raja’s plight. They swooped down and pecked at the net until Raja managed to free himself.

As soon as he was out, Raja bolted for the fence, with Lala Kisan close behind. Luckily, Raja spotted the gap in the fence and squeezed back through it just in time. He ran all the way home to his Amma’s burrow.

When he arrived, Amma was waiting for him. "Raja, where have you been? And where are your sandals and kurta (shirt)?" she asked, concerned.

Raja was too exhausted to explain. His Amma sighed and sent him to bed without his favorite carrot halwa. Meanwhile, Chintu, Mintu, and Bittu happily enjoyed their meal of roti, milk, and sweet berries.

Moral of the story: "Always listen to your elders' advice." Disobedience can lead to danger, but following rules and guidance keeps you safe from harm.
