The Magic Fish

Once upon a time, in a small village in India, there lived a poor fisherman named Ramesh. He lived with his wife, Leela, in a tiny hut by the river. Every day, Ramesh would go out to the river to catch fish, which they would either eat or sell in the market to make a living. Though their life was simple, Ramesh and Leela often wished for more wealth and comfort.

One day, as Ramesh was fishing, he caught a strange, glittering fish. To his astonishment, the fish spoke in a gentle voice, "Oh kind fisherman, please let me go! I am a magical fish, and if you set me free, I will grant you any wish you desire."

Ramesh was surprised but also kind-hearted. He said, "I don’t want to harm you. Go back to the river." Without making any wish, he released the magical fish and went home.

When Ramesh told his wife, Leela, about the magical fish, she was furious. "How could you let it go without asking for anything? Go back and call the fish. Ask for a better house for us!"

Feeling guilty, Ramesh returned to the river and called out, "Oh magical fish, please come to me. My wife has a wish." The fish surfaced and said, "What does she wish for, fisherman?"

"My wife wants a better house," said Ramesh. "Your wish is granted," said the fish, and it swam away.

When Ramesh returned home, he saw their tiny hut had turned into a beautiful house with strong walls, a thatched roof, and even a small garden. Ramesh was happy, but Leela was not satisfied for long. Soon, she said, "This house is nice, but I want to live like royalty. Go and ask the fish to make us king and queen!"

Ramesh didn’t like the idea, but to keep his wife happy, he returned to the river. "Oh magical fish," he called. "My wife wants to be queen."

The fish agreed, and when Ramesh went back, their house had turned into a magnificent palace. Servants waited at the door, and Leela sat on a golden throne. Ramesh thought they would finally be content, but Leela’s greed only grew.

"Ramesh," she said, "I now want to rule over the sun, moon, and stars! Go ask the fish to make me the ruler of the universe!"

Ramesh was horrified by her greed, but he went back to the river. This time, the sky had turned dark, and the river was rough and stormy. "Oh magical fish," Ramesh called, "my wife wants to rule the universe."

The fish looked at him sadly and said, "Your wife’s greed knows no bounds. Go home, fisherman, and see what has become of your greed."

When Ramesh returned, he found that the palace had vanished. Their beautiful house was gone, too. Instead, he saw their tiny, broken hut, just as it had been before. Inside, Leela sat weeping, realizing her greed had taken everything away.

From that day on, Ramesh and Leela lived humbly, grateful for what they had, and never again wished for more than they needed.

Moral of the story: "Be content with what you have." Greed can lead to loss, while gratitude and humility bring true happiness.
