Founding & Vision

Founded in 2007, Abhaya Kshethram was launched on the occasion of Mother Teresa’s birthday, symbolizing its deep commitment to selfless service.

It operates as a registered charitable trust under the Indian Trusts Act and holds 12A exemption under the Income Tax Act, ensuring transparency and accountability in all its social work.

The institution’s guiding philosophy is simple yet profound:

“To serve God by serving humanity.”

Who Resides at Abhaya Kshethram

The founder started with 2 residents in 2007, Abhaya Kshethram houses over ~200 residents, including:

  • Physically challenged orphans
  • Mentally challenged orphans
  • Abandoned or destitute women
  • Elderly persons without support

Each resident is considered a “student” at Abhaya Kshethram — irrespective of age or condition — reflecting the idea that learning, inclusion, and dignity are lifelong.

Leadership: Dr. S. A. Thasleem Sultana

At the heart of Abhaya Kshethram’s journey is Dr. S. A. Thasleem Sultana, its founder and director.

A scholar and social reformer, she holds a PhD in Special Education from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, with her research focusing on inclusive education for children with special needs.

Her dedication has earned national recognition, including:

  • Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Award (2010)Ministry of Women & Child Development
  • 100 Inspiring Women Award (2016) — at Rashtrapati Bhavan
  • Devi Award (2016) — presented by the Vice President of India

Under her compassionate leadership, Abhaya Kshethram continues to grow as a space of healing, empowerment, and unconditional love.

Daily Life & Operations

  • The residents are accommodated across three buildings, organized by age / need.
  • Their daily needs (food, clothing, medication, care) are met through donations from individuals, small firms, and through organizations such as Hope for Humanity.
  • Notably, Abhaya Kshethram does not depend on government funding.
  • The institution also emphasizes meaningful engagement: residents contribute via crafts (making bags, greeting cards, stitching) in line with their abilities.

Impact & Community Recognition

  • Abhaya Kshethram supports around ~200 residents, including 35 physically challenged orphans, 67 mentally challenged orphans, 48 destitute women, and 50 elderly individuals.
