  • Prepare the Can:

    • Begin by rinsing out the empty aluminum soda can to remove any leftover liquid.
    • Remove the tab from the top of the can, if it's still attached.
  • Heat the Can:
    • Using heat-resistant tongs or a pair of pliers, hold the aluminum can over a stovetop or hot plate.
    • Rotate the can evenly to ensure that all sides are heated uniformly.
    • Be careful not to burn yourself and wear safety goggles if desired.
  • Wait for Boiling:
    • Continue heating the can until you see steam rising from the opening.
    • Be patient and wait until the water inside the can reaches its boiling point.
  • Immerse in Cold Water:
    • Once the water inside the can has reached its boiling point, quickly use the tongs or pliers to remove the can from the heat source.
    • Carefully submerge the bottom of the can into a bowl or container filled with cold water.
    • Be cautious as steam may release from the can when it's submerged.
  • Observe the Result:
    • As the can is immersed in the cold water, the sudden change in temperature causes the steam inside the can to condense rapidly, creating a vacuum.
    • The outside air pressure is now greater than the pressure inside the can, causing the can to collapse inward with a loud crunching sound.
  • Discuss and Learn:
    • After conducting the experiment, discuss with children the scientific principles behind it, including air pressure, temperature and phase changes.
    • Encourage them to think about real-life applications of these principles and how they are used in various industries.
