The controversy surrounding the Karnataka Assembly’s decision to sentence two editors to one year in prison for alleged defamation has deepened. Reports reveal one editor claims ongoing intimidation from a sitting legislator.

Assembly Verdict and Legal Roadmap

On June 21, 2017, the Assembly’s Privileges Committee found Anil Raj, editor of the Yelahanka tabloid Yelahanka Voice, and Ravi Belagere, editor of Hai Bangalore, guilty of publishing allegedly defamatory articles against MLAs, including Speaker K. B. Koliwad. They were sentenced to one-year imprisonment.

The arrests were stayed after both filed review petitions, and the issue was set for discussion during the 2017 winter Assembly session (Sources: Nivedita Niranjan Kumar & Kavita Patil/Newslaundry).

Allegations Against MLA S. R. Vishwanath

Media reports cite that Anil Raj alleges BJP MLA S. R. Vishwanath of Yelahanka has been intimidating him for years. He claims:

  • His investigative reporting on Vishwanath’s alleged corrupt practices began in 2013.
  • After exposing the MLA’s ties with a known criminal, Raj said he faced intimidation, with men stationed outside his home for days.
  • In 2017, men posing as police officers allegedly raided his home and seized documents relating to his exposés. Raj did not file a complaint due to fear of repercussions.
  • He also continued aggressive coverage of an attempted assassination of Kabagere Srinivas—an attack allegedly linked to Vishwanath’s associates. Raj claimed his consistent reporting on the matter made him a target (Source: 101Reporters/Newslaundry).

In response, MLA Vishwanath dismissed the accusations, calling Raj a “blackmailer” and declining to comment further due to pending proceedings.

Press Freedom and Media Backlash

Journalist organizations condemned the Assembly’s move. The Press Club of Bangalore (2017) described the verdict as an attack on the broader journalist community, warning of repercussions for freedom of speech.

Senior editors also weighed in:

  • Subrahmanya K (Deccan Herald) emphasized that courts—not legislatures—should adjudicate defamation.
  • Ramu Patil (New Indian Express) echoed that only the judiciary can determine if reporting is defamatory.

A Tragedy Inside Karnataka’s Prisons

Compounding the tension was the death of Anil Raj in 2017 while in custody. According to multiple credible reports, Raj was discovered hanging in a temple within Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, Bengaluru. Officials attributed his death to suicide (Sources: New Indian Express, Times of India, Deccan Herald, IBTimes).

However, his family alleged foul play, pointing to visible injuries on his forehead and body. They demanded a post-mortem report before deciding on further action (Source: The New Indian Express)

Raj’s detention stemmed from a rape case filed by a former employee in 2017. Earlier in 2017, the Assembly had penalized him for breach of privilege over his critical writings against Speaker K. B. Koliwad—a sentence he challenged successfully in court (Sources: New Indian Express, Times of India, Deccan Herald).

Broader Implications

The progression of events—from legislative conviction to custodial death—has reignited public concern over press liberty, judicial oversight, and protection of journalists. The right of journalists to report on public figures, even against potential intimidation, remains a core issue under scrutiny.
