The Crow and the Fox

Once upon a time, in a dense forest near the Indian village of Champapur, there lived a clever fox named Gopal and a proud crow named Kalu. Kalu, the crow, was known for his arrogance and often flaunted his finds to the other animals.

One sunny morning, Kalu found a large, delicious piece of roti smeared with ghee near the village. Excited by his treasure, he quickly picked it up in his beak and flew to a tall tree in the forest to enjoy it in peace. As he perched on the tree, he noticed the other animals below eyeing him with envy. Kalu puffed out his chest with pride, feeling very important.

Now, Gopal, the fox, was passing by and saw the crow with the roti. Gopal’s stomach growled with hunger, and he decided to use his wit to get the roti for himself. Looking up at Kalu, he called out sweetly, "Oh, Kalu! What a magnificent bird you are! Your feathers are so shiny, and your eyes sparkle like gems!"

Kalu, flattered by the compliments, looked down at Gopal, his pride growing even more. But he held the roti firmly in his beak and said nothing.

Gopal continued, "Not only are you the most beautiful bird in the forest, but I’ve also heard that your voice is the sweetest. It is said that when Kalu the crow sings, the entire forest stops to listen. Will you please honor me with a song?"

Kalu, though proud, was also quite vain. The idea of everyone praising his voice was too tempting to resist. Forgetting the roti in his beak, he opened his mouth and let out a loud, “Caw! Caw! Caw!”

As soon as Kalu opened his beak, the roti fell to the ground. Quick as a flash, Gopal grabbed it and ran off, laughing. “Thank you for the delicious breakfast, Kalu!” he called over his shoulder.

Kalu sat on the branch, realizing he had been tricked. He felt embarrassed and muttered to himself, “I let my pride and vanity get the better of me.”

From that day on, Kalu learned to be wary of flattery and to not let his arrogance cloud his judgment.

Moral of the story: "Beware of flatterers, for they often have hidden motives." Stay humble, and don’t let vanity lead you into trouble.
