Creating rock candy crystal sticks is a fun and educational science experiment that allows children to observe crystal formation and learn about solubility and saturation.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

Materials:

  • Granulated sugar
  • Water
  • Glass or plastic jars or cups
  • Wooden skewers or bamboo sticks
  • Clothespins
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Flavor extracts (optional)
  • Saucepan
  • Stirring spoon
  • Scissors

Procedure:

  • Prepare the Sugar Solution:
    • In a saucepan, heat water until it reaches boiling point.
    • Gradually add granulated sugar to the boiling water, stirring continuously until no more sugar dissolves. This creates a supersaturated sugar solution.
    • Optional: Add food coloring and flavor extracts to the solution to create colored and flavored rock candy.
  • Prepare the Sticks:
    • While the sugar solution is heating, prepare the sticks. Use scissors to cut wooden skewers or bamboo sticks to the desired length for your rock candy sticks.
    • Attach a clothespin to one end of each stick. This will serve as a weight to keep the stick submerged in the sugar solution.
  • Dip the Sticks:
    • Dip each stick into the sugar solution, ensuring that it's fully coated.
    • Remove the sticks from the solution and allow any excess solution to drip off.
  • Before placing the sticks in the jars, roll them in granulated sugar to create seed crystals on the surface. This will provide a surface for crystal growth.
  • Place the sugar-coated sticks in the jars or cups, making sure that they are suspended in the solution and do not touch the sides or bottom of the container.
  • Place the jars in a cool, undisturbed location where they won't be disturbed. Allow several days to a week for crystals to form on the sticks. You should start to see crystal growth within a day or two.
  • Check the progress of the crystal growth regularly. Encourage children to observe and document any changes they see.
  • Once the crystals have reached the desired size, carefully remove the sticks from the jars. Allow them to dry completely before handling or eating.

Explanation:

As the sugar solution cools, the solubility of the sugar decreases, causing the excess sugar to come out of the solution and crystallize on the sticks. The seed crystals provided by rolling the sticks in granulated sugar promote crystal growth.

Tips:

  • Experiment with different flavors and colors to create a variety of rock candy sticks.
  • Encourage children to make predictions about how long it will take for crystals to form and compare their observations with their predictions.
  • Discuss the science behind crystal formation and how it relates to concepts such as solubility and saturation.

Rock candy crystal sticks are not only a delicious treat but also a fascinating way to explore the science of crystal formation with children.
